Long-term Optimization
The Energy Optima 3 module for Production Optimization contains functionality for long-term simulation and scenario calculations. You can run several different optimizations over several years ahead and required granularity with fast calculation times and see how different changes or added units will affect your energy production.
This is very important for an accurate planning of the green energy transition with real data for your energy system and for making the right decision for new investments.
Energy Optima 3 long-term optimization offers:
- Long-term economically optimized production plans
- Automatic scenario calculations using a Work-Flow-Engine
- Simulation of different production scenarios and costs
- Installation of new technique, such as hydrogen systems, CCS/CCU etc.
- Optimized dimension of new units (CAPEX)
- Fuel planning
- Audit and maintenance planning
- CO₂ emission cost planning
- Contracts for fuel and energy supply
- Calculation and investment choices.
Find the right production mix for the future
The optimal tool for long-term planning
Energy Optima 3 comes with one of the fastest long-term optimization calculation times on the market. This tool is useful for strategic long-term planning and for future-proofing of the energy systems.
The Energy Optima 3 module for long-term optimization has time horizons for one month to up to over 20 years.
There are a multitude of long-term decisions that can improve the economy of the energy companies. You can calculate how to operate your production plants with profitability in different future scenarios, with an evolved system, using new technique and phasing out fossil fuels.
New business models for e.g. consumer flexibility, Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) and e-fuels can be evaluated in order to improve the company’s green profile.
The system is based on mixed integer programming. This method enables the system to take a large number of variables, such as start/stop times and load intervals of the production units into account.
The long-term optimization offers the possibility to evaluate of how adding new technique would affect the production system, such as investment in a new electric boiler, heat pump, thermal storage, battery or a hydrogen system.
You can run an unlimited amount of optimizations and scenarios. For a hydrogen system e.g. with electrolysis and/or fuel cells, with or without storage, optimal participation on trading markets, which combination or technique would be the most beneficial for the specific system.
Heat transition planning
Many energy utilities and industries are currently working on municipal heating plans and energy transition plans to phase out fossil fuels.
Plan your green energy transition and future-proof your energy system with real production data
In this context, the conversion of the energy supply and the right investment decision is often complex and it’s difficult to determine the right choices for future technology and plant size.
With the help of investment optimizations and scenario calculations in Energy Optima 3, municipal utilities can create preliminary studies for the transition to a climate-neutral heat supply and identify specific technical potential for decarbonization.
Thanks to the extensive results from the long-term optimizations, different production plants can be compared and weighed up individually or in combination with each other and their plant size can be calculated for the heat supply.
This strategic tool answers the following questions for you:
- What will the economically optimal CO₂-neutral energy mix look like in the future?
- What type of production is recommended for my district energy system in the next few years?
- How economical are new generation plants in the existing energy system?
- How much fossil fuels and CO₂ will you reduce in year XY?
Forecasts and Optimization
In Energy Optima 3, it is possible to simulate different yearly outdoor temperatures and then calculate the corresponding optimized operation of the production system. Since many variables in the technical data of the production units are incorporated in the optimization calculations, an accurate picture of the total operational costs over the year can be achieved.
Optimized dimension of new units (CAPEX)
The optimization horizon (how far ahead the optimization extends) is flexible and can be freely adjusted by the user. Optimizations can be started, for example, once per hour, but this can also be chosen by the user. A work flow engine can automate different optimization scenario calculations with, for example, different electricity prices and heat consumption.
All optimization results are saved in a database and can be transferred for further analysis.
Fuel planning
In the long-term optimization module it is possible to predict the amount of different fuels for different time periods of the year and this drastically reduces the work needed with fuel inventory planning.
Large cost-saving opportunities are also connected to the yearly planning of fuel usage.
Audit Planning
The objective with audit planning is to minimise costs by finding the most suitable periods for the audit. The right time for revision can be dependent on many different factors that are difficult to overview manually.
CO₂ Emission Planning
Another important feature in the Energy Optima 3 module for long-term optimization is the possibility to calculate the CO₂.
emissions during different parts of the year, calculated per fuel with CO₂ emissions. The costs for the CO₂ emissions are included in the optimization calculations and thus influence the results of them.
Fuel/electricity contracts with MWh limitations
It is possible to optimize the use of fuel or electricity from contracts that have long-term limitations on the summarized (MWh) usage during a certain time period. It can e.g. be a natural gas fuel contract with a limitation of the natural gas usage during a period of the year. It can also be an electricity purchase contract with the same type of limitations.
